History

In December 1680, King Charles XI of Sweden signed the documents ordering the newly formed 'Royal State Office' (Kungl. Maj:ts Staats Contoir) to take charge of the country's public finances. This was the precursor of the present-day Statskontoret.

Putting Sweden's public finances — then in a poor state after years of war — on a sound footing was the organisation's first assignment. Over the years, Statskontoret has performed a variety of tasks and fluctuated widely in size. Today, with some 80 investigators, Statskontoret is the Government's staff organisation for surveying, evaluating and monitoring state and state-funded activities.

In 2008 Yvonne Gustafsson became the first woman appointed as Director General for Statskontoret.
